I am hoping someone can answer a question for me or at least direct me to a site that I can give some information to a provider.
I have a Chiropractor contact me today about possibly doing her billing. In the conversation she mentioned she does not charge the patient their copays because she feels that what she gets paid by the insurance is substantial enough. I thought that was part of the patient contractual agreement with the insurance company and our responsibility to collect it. I have seen in certain circumstances that a provider write off the copay due to financial hardships and have had the patient sign a hardship form. She even mentioned that she has written off the deductable which I do know can be seen as fraudulent by the insurance company since it is a part of the contract between the insurance and the patient. What I would like to find is something, a paragraph, document etc that states what are the rules for copays and what the possible penalties are for not collecting.
Any information anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.
