Posts: 9 Sep 5 08 4:50 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I am having a problem finding a Dx code I can use to send a patient for pre admission testing which includes labs-PT and PTT. The patient is NOT on a blood thinner. The test is done prior to surgery to make sure there are not bleeding problems. But Medicare has stopped paying for these tests with our usual PAT code V728.0. Any ideas???

Posts: 1316 Sep 5 08 9:02 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The type of surgery that they're having and their past medical history would probably give you a multitude of ICD codes that are acceptable. Even if the patient is not on thinners, there are many codes that cover past surgeries, illnesses, injuries and conditions that allow coverage for a PT /PTT What are some examples, of the last 4-5, that you've needed to code? barbara

Posts: 197 Sep 6 08 8:18 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Many patients do not meet the criteria for PT and PTT. It is usually hospital policy that these are performed prior to surgery. You need to check CMS national laboratory coverage determinations: http://www.cms.hhs.gov/mc...&ncd_sections=40& Unless your patient has a diagnosis that is covered under these policies, an ABN should be signed by the patient. To quote CMS "Hospital/clinic-specific policies, protocols, etc., in and of themselves, cannot alone justify coverage."
