There are two types of audit - internal and external.

External audits are done by insurance companies or the government either randomly or if you meet a certain criteria (XX number of level 5 visits in a given time period, for instance), or if there has been a complaint. Usually the doctor is mailed a notice with information on what they want to know.

Then there are internal audits. Personally I don't believe that billers should be auditing doctor's records. In larger companies, there will be audits where a certain number of records are pulled to see if what is in the record supports what was billed. Someone with coding experience would be doing this.
