The reason you are seeing denials is because you are not doing psychological testing. You are doing short, self-scoring self-assessments. These are not psychological testing and are not billable to anyone; they are part of your office visit.

Also, in order for psychological testing to be medically necessary, the provider must first meet with the patient and make a diagnosis. It is the seeking of clarity of that diagnosis that causes psych testing to be performed. The provider then writes a report of the results and utilizes those results in their treatment.

I have companies contact me all the time that try to tell me that, as a pain management practice (where I am now), we can do these assessments and bill for them and I shut them down quick. I tell them, you can't bill for a Mini-Mental Status Exam, you can't bill for a SOAPP-R (opioid risk assessment), etc.

Psychological Testing is the MMPI, the Wechsler, the Stanford-Binet, etc.
