Maybe this is a state or regional thing. In recent health insurance shopping, I saw lots of deductibles of $1500 to $5000 and just a few higher than that.

It was cheaper for me to get a "child only" policy for my youngster (at $100 premium per month, 4 visits at $40 copay, then $1500 deductible, then 85% coverage) than it was to put her on my plan.

I just did a "quick quote" on my broker's website, and for a 35 year old male and a 6 year old female (just as an example), with up to $200 per month premium to spend, I came up with this:

Plan #1: $118 per month premium, $5000/$10,000 deductible, $40 for first 2 office visits then deductible then 100% coverage, $15 generic drugs, wellcare is free for all ages, 40% copay on ER & Hospital.
Plan #2: $146 per month premium, $3300/$6600 deductible, otherwise same as plan 1.
Plan #3: $193 per month premium, $1000/$2000 deductible, otherwise same as plan 1.

Plan #4: $161 per month premium, $2500/$5000 deductible, free wellcare, $15 generic drugs, 50% copay for everything else (doctor visits, radiology, etc.).
Plan #5: $180 per month premium, $$1500/$3000 deductible, otherwise same as plan 4.

Plan #6: $177 per month premium, $5150 family deductible, free wellcare, 20% copay everything else including drugs.
