We appreciate the information you have provided.
I've been to many seminars, both as an attendee and as a speaker.
When I am a speaker, and those who have attended my seminars can attest to, when I reference something, I always have the law or statute there or available so that I can prove what I say.
Usually, as an attendee, I hear these things to, including alot of medical billing urban myths. I always ask the speaker for a reference and that blows them out of the water because they don't have it, nor can they provide it. This is because some speakers are those that just go around, give seminars, and are not in the trenches with us. They like to hear themselves talk and have no basis behind their topic. For example, at an insurance seminar, a speaker said that "The AMA says an EKG is included with an E/M!" I raised my hand and asked her where she got this. She said it was her insurance company's policy. I then raised a document I had with me, from the AMA that said an EKG was NOT included with an E/M and I quoted Page 2 of the CPT manual that says diagnostic tests are not included with an E/M" Naturally it got the audience's attention. She flustered and then asked me to leave the seminar. I told her no and that her information was false and I was sticking around to see what other falsehoods she was presenting. The seminar was cancelled immediately. The attendees came to me asking for a copy of the letter. The seminar leader was not kind and I told him that if they were going to present information to us, it better be correct and not to put me down for presenting the truth.
One thing to know about Medicare. Everything is passed along to the local vendors via a Medicare transmittal. These transmittals are for public knowledge and available on the CMS website. The key is knowing how to look for them. So, when I hear something from a Medicare rep, I always ask them for the referenced transmittal because even changes to Medicare rules are passed via the transmittal.
But, keep us posted on what you find and my thanks to you for sharing.
