Posts: 32 (02/23/05 16:25:03) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Hi, Good day.Can some one help me by sharing some Info on Hospital coding.What I understand is that you bill for the medicine and supply of equipments but I see lots of questions regarding E&M for hospitals Under whose ID are these being billed?.Does the Dx coding require a ICD-10/ is the coding based on DRG's.Apart from the AAPC guides what are the books that we need for preparation to take up the CPC-H exam(some people say that going for CPC-H is not really necessary when you have a CPC!).I would also like to know what are the benefits in taking a CPC-H. Posts: 6 (06/10/05 14:09:41) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Mostly the same....we do use the ICD procedure codes and that is different, I believe. Hospital coding seems to have more "going on" for each claim. Lots of places to look to pick up dx codes and also you have to look for any procedures - where as in a doctors office alot of it is handed to you cut and dry. For instance we check alot of charges in our HIS dept and that takes knowing what you should be seeing to begin with with is a challenge at first. So many different supplies, tests, ect. Hospital coding requires working with alot of different depts to make a claim clean...so it takes learning what each dept should be charging for and learning how work with everyone to get the acct out the door clean. From Registration, ER, Pharmacy, HIS, to the Billing Dept. Hope that helps! I think the smaller hospitals tend to do more double checking of charges just because it's do able and worth it.

My software doesn't make UB-92s. Can you use 1500s for hospital billing? If not, can you recommend good software for hospital billing? Also, if I'm going to hire someone to do hospital billing, what sort of certification should I look for? thanks, Jan

Posts: 2199 (09/11/05 16:23:53) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hi, I'm not summerair, but I would be VERY careful about taking on a hospital as a client if you have no hospital experience. If you already have a staff whose members include someone with hospital experience you could manage it. But hospital billing has elements that don't even enter into professional billing - TOBs, Revenue Codes, procedure codes, condition codes, value codes, occurence codes, discharge status and on and on and on. Unless you have a mentor (like an experienced staff member) I would definitely caution you against taking on a hospital client. Same if you were going to hire someone - I would look more for the experience than the certification (assuming you are actually talking about the billing and not the coding). Unless I am mis-reading between the lines and you have non-hospital UB experience - then you can probably swing it! I'm wondering, too, what facility billing you do on HCFAs? I have never heard of any type of facility that bills on HCFAs. I'm not doubting - just trying to edify myself.

Posts: 331 (09/12/05 20:21:44) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have been billing for 5 years at a 44 bed rural hospital, Critical Access Method II to boot. I have been through 1 Medicare FI switchover, a change from being an APC/DRG Medicare/Medicaid hospital to being Critical Access Method I to being CAH Method II. We are soon to change from one clearinghouse to another and it is complicated. If I did not have hospital billing experience I would ask someone to mentor me way before I ever tried to take it on by myself. I gotta tell you, when I read some of the postings here from people who only bill for physicians I feel like I am reading Greek. Yes we bill for 2 physicians but not on a clinical level. 2 very different worlds. Not trying to deter, just forewarn....Amy
